Why Blazer Fans Should Be Excited
Martell has been cleared to play!
Andre Miller signed as a FA & the Blazers also get Martell Webster back after sitting out the entire year.
If you forgot what Martell can do for the team with his shooting - this video should remind you.
Welcome back Martell!

"The Summer of Kevin Pritchard"
It was a fun season for Trail Blazer fans who watched the team win 54 games and secure home court advantage in round one of the NBA Playoffs. Even though the Blazers had the HC advantage, the Rockets were too much for the young team and they were eliminated in six games. Roy and Aldridge were the only Blazers who showed up on a consistent basis but it didn't stop Blazer star Brandon Roy who said his goal next year was to win a Championship and he will work to do whatever it takes to get it done.
I love Roy's attitude but the current roster has holes and unless Kevin Pritchard can work his magic over the summer bringing in toughness in the low post along with a veteran who's played in big games, Roy's goal of winning a Championship will not be in the cards.
Kevin Pritchard needs to make a few decisions on players to add or subtract and one that I would love to see on the add list is Grant Hill. Hill played in every game this season for the 1st time in many years and provides them with a veteran who's played in many big games. Making under 2million last year, the Blazers could offer him twice that amount and still get a great deal.
A Healthy Martell Webster with Grant Hill and Nicolas Batum backing him up makes it tough on Travis Outlaw to play SF. His only contribution to the team is on the offensive end and if his shot isn't falling, he's a liability on defense you just can't ignore so backing up Lamarcus at the 4 isn't they way to go. Let's be honest, Outlaw can't guard a chair. The team needs to improve their defense and add some toughness but help can only come through free agency. There are 3 players that could help the team in this department - Paul Milsap, Anderson Varejao and David Lee.
Giving RUDY the role of the 3rd scoring option is a good way to go next year making Travis Outlaw expendable.
The summer of Pritchard should be interesting.
Bad News out of Portland today - Greg Oden has decided to return to Ohio to attend classes this summer and will apparently work on his game when he's not studying the books. I think this is a BAD decision by a guy who was picked #1 overall, missed last year with an injury and came back looking slow and uncoordinated. What I wanted him to say - "I want to take a month off and I promise to get back to work on the court & Yes, I will be part of the Blazers summer league team"
Question for Blazer Fans -
How will you feel if Greg Oden shows up at training camp looking like the same player he was this year? Do you think he will make the Olympic Team? Is Kirk Hinrich the answer for the Blazers at the point guard or would you rather have Andre Miller who skipped the exit interview in Phily? Tell us how you feel.

Guardians of the game - Inside look on College Basketball
I just finished reading Guardians of the Game "A Legacy of Leadership".
Dr. Naismith invented the game but it was the man from Kansas, Phog Allen who was behind coaching it. The book profiles the games greatest coaches & highlights their incredible impact on college basketball. Phog Allen, John Wooden, Big House Gaines, Dean Smith, Bobby Knight and Coach K are a few of the names you might recognize but there were so many others who influenced the game and this book tells you all about it.
In Guardians of the Game, you can read the real story behind the rules committee decision to outlaw the "Dunk" & how the NABC saved the dribble and kept it part of the game.
There are so many great stories in this book, If you are a fan of college basketball, Guardians of the Game is must read -

Beavers Pelted by DUCKS 65-38
As I watched the Ducks dominate the Beavers at Reser Field in the 1st half, I looked to my Beaver friend sitting next to me and said "You still have the 2nd half" and he replied, we don't have a chance.
Boy, was he right! The Ducks put and end to the Beavers 8 game winning streak at Reser with a complete thrashing of their rivals as they dominated the game from start to the finish scoring a record 65 points for a CIVIL WAR game.
The BIG Duck WIN spoils the Beavers chance to play in the Rose Bowl.
This was one of the finest performances by the Ducks from start to finish I have witnessed. I predicted a Duck upset but never thought it would unfold the way it did because I felt the Beavers defense would limit the running game - but Jeremiah Johnson was ready to play his best game running wild against the Beavers for 219 yards which included an 83 yard touchdown run.
Johnson had 219 yards and Legarrette Blount helped out with 112 yards against a Beaver Defense that was ranked 13th in the nation.
I thought the DUCK passing attack was subpar up to this point of the season but what can you say about Jeremiah Masoli? He just keeps getting better and better every snap he takes. The JC transfer played his best game in the biggest game of the year on saturday. Masoli completed 11-17 passes for 274 yards & 3 touchdowns and he also ran one in for a TD.
Masoli and the rest of the QUACK ATTACK finished with 694 yards in offense against the Beavers in their house!
Chip Kelly deserves a shout and the game ball for opening up the playbook and putting as much speed on the field as possible. He put in a few trick plays that totally caught the Beavers off guard. Let's hope the Ducks can make Kelly an offer that will keep him in Eugene until Mike is ready to take over as AD. Chip Kelly as the Head Coach calling the plays with MB upstairs running the entire Athletic Department is a good thing. I sure hope it works out this way.
It was a lot of fun walking around Reser in my Duck gear with a smile that went from ear to ear as the Ducks ended the 2 game losing streak in the CW with a pelting of the Beavers 65-38!
As a side note - Beaver fans were gracious and treated me pretty good for being a DUCK on their turf. The tailgaiting was top notch all day long which makes saturday one of the best football games I have attended in the last 10 years.
It looks like the QUACK ATTACK will be heading to Sunny San Diego to play in the Holiday Bowl!

Oden needs time to get his groove back
The young center hasn't played competitive basketball in a long time yet it doesn't stop people from commenting that he doesn't look like the Golden Child everyone raved about after being drafted #1 overall.
MEMO to the media and fans who keep saying the Golden Child is a bust -
Big Men like Greg Oden take longer to get back into shape after major knee surgery, relax and give him the time he needs. The Blazers window for a Championship is still a couple years away so no harm waiting for a healthy GO.
Oden has been a hard worker his entire life of basketball and spent the entire last year rehabbing the knee doing everything the Blazers told him to do. Everyone should just be happy that his knee isn't sore and causing him trouble, but they aren't. They expect too much too soon.
The only thing I think the Blazers training staff could have done differently was limiting his workouts in the weight room. The young center has never played with so much girth and this is the reason why he looks awkward playing with other NBA players. He's not close to being in basketball shape after such a long layoff combined with the extra 30 pounds.
I think it will take him at least 1/2 of a season or longer to get his groove back against the BEST players in the world.
41 games - that's when he will really start causing havoc on the court like we remember him doing before he came into the NBA after playing very little in college, go find a picture of Oden after the surgery and take a look at him now ) He's completely changed
I am taking it easy on Greg and I'm going to give him a lot more time because of all the size he's added and feel Blazer fans and the media should not begin to critique his play until after the All-Star Break at the very least.
Portland's Golden Child will be everything Blazer fans & the media expected and more if they just give Greg more time - his body and mind will lighten up, so why don't you.
That's my story & I'm sticking to it"

Ducks set new record
Justin Roper was back as the starter for the Ducks and looked very sharp except for an early interception. Roper bounced back quickly and when the dust cleared, the Ducks had a new school record finishing with 688 yards of offense and surpassing the 60 point mark with a 66-24 thrashing of the Aggies from Utah. When your offense puts up 60+ points against anyone, it's impressive and if you think it's easy just check the Ohio State score over the weekend.
This Duck team has serious speed up and down the roster and Terrance Scott provided Duck fans with a glimpse when he took a fly screen 51 yards into the endzone in less than 10 seconds, Scott is a burner in the Sammie Parker mold and he should help when the Ducks line up and spread the field against a very fast USC Trojan defense later this year.
Jeremiah Johnson went to the bench early in the 1st quarter after jamming his shoulder and was replaced by Legarrette Blount who took full advantage of the extra playing time gaining 132 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 18 carries, not bad for his 2nd game in front of a sellout crowd. Blount looked better and better as the game went along and said afterwards "The game seemed to get slower and slower and I really started to understand it and when to hit the holes" - "I'm on cloud nine right now because we won and I played much more and better than I thought I would"
The Ducks played a lot of players against a weak Utah State team and that's the best thing about these type of blowouts. Many players who really need it get more opportunities to get into the groove before the schedule gets tougher.
Ed Dickson caught 6 passes for 70 yards after acting as a blocker against Washington last week and that was great to see because I believe Dickson will 'the over the middle weapon" they will need against USC on the road.
The 3 Duck QB's gave everyone a chance to shine as they continued to spread the ball around in the up tempo offense that ran a total of 88 plays. Young Ducks who might not have played if the game was close got the opportunity to play extended minutes in the 3rd and 4th quarters and that will help as the season progresses and the Ducks are playing tougher Pac10 opponents. The Ducks can still improve on special teams and overall execution but have a few more games to get the kinks out before they go on the road against the Trojans.
The Ducks head to Indiana to play Purdue next saturday and if Jeremiah Johnson, Blount, Crenshaw and Alston are healthy the Ducks will blow out the Boilermakers who will have a hard time stopping the offensive genius of Chip Kelly and the ultra quick spread option attack.
philtheduck's prediction
The Boilermakers are in trouble playing at this tempo!

BLAZER FANS MEET Rudy @ 11:30 tonight!
Blazer fans can watch Rudy tonight against Greece on the USA Network. ( add 15 hours for China ) This will be my first look at Rudy and I am excited.
Check back for updates on his play throughout Olympic play and let's discuss how you think he can help the Blazers this year. Rudy leads Spain with 16 points in a victory over Greece and as I said before, I was hoping to see Rudy use his quick 1st step to get by defenders and that's exactly what I got to see. He beat his man and the defender who helped using his explosive first step into the lane whenever he wanted. The Blazers will be able to put Roy, Rudy and Bayless on the floor together when the game is on the line and they need an easy basket. This is a big plus for a team that stuggled getting easy baskets. I also liked how Rudy get's into his lane so quickly after steals.
The remaining schedule for Spain is - Aug 12, 13, 16 & 18th.

BLAZERS GET LUCKY & GRAB BAYLESS
Anyone who has watched Jerryd Bayless play basketball will tell you he can really play the game at a high level and that's why he was listed as the 4th best player in the draft.
With the Blazers picking 13th in the draft it was impossible to think Bayless would be the guard they ended up with..............but the Blazer GMagician does what he does best and put a deal together that got them the super-explosive combo-guard Jerryd Bayless.
The Blazers can always use another shot maker and this is exactly what Bayless does best - SCORE THE BALL. His scoring ability and explosiveness is an upgrade over Jack and if they lose Jones in free-agency it could really be a plus.
The Blazers received Bayless and Diogu for Jack, Rush and Josh McRoberts.
BLAZER FANS who enjoyed Damon Stoudamire and what he did in Portland will really love Bayless because he is better in every way. Bayless is 6' 3 with an intense competitive nature who will dunk on bigs. Think of a young Steve Francis dunking the ball on bigs but even better.
Summer League MVP turned out to be Portland's own Jerryd Bayless who had his way with everyone who tried to guard him. Jerryd's quick 1st step & his non stop attacking style proved effective - the trips to the free-throw line never stopped.
I can't wait to see him in the lineup next year.
When Roy is double teamed the ball will go to Bayless instead of Jarret Jack. Jerryd will pump fake, blow by the defender and throw down over Kobe Bryant at the Rose Garden and we will hear Wheels screams over the radio waves "BOOM SHAKA LACKA''
Brandon Roy can make plays from the wing while Bayless plays off the ball. This should be a great mix of talent in the backcourt for Nate to experiment with. Expect to see this team really coming together after the All-Star break if not right before.
Kobe, get ready for a taste!!!

SHOULD THE BLAZERS TAKE A GAMBLE ON BILL WALKER?
Walker played hurt for most of the year last season but still put up 30 points three times for KSU who had Michael Beasley as the 1st option. Walker plays hard all the time and should be on an NBA bench next year.

Should the Blazers grab Russell Westbrook, DJ Augustin or Bill Walker who is the most athletic player in the 2008 NBA Draft?
Westbrook has the athletic ability to keep the defense on it's heels and can explode to the rim when they give up and inch. I believe Russell Westbrook could develop into a solid role player who would get the team easy baskets.
Easy baskets were hard to come by last year because the Blazers didn't have all the players it takes to be a good running team. They missed having another player off the bench who could make a steal and take the ball from mid court into the paint and dunk with authority when the defense was back peddling. They missed another quick guard who would be a threat on the fast break. They missed having another guard who could apply pressure up and down the court. Westbrook provides the Blazers with the additional skills on offense and defense they don't get from Jarret Jack and Steve Blake.
Check out these YouTube videos of Westbrook and Bill "SKY WALKER" and tell me these guys wouldn't rock the RoseGarden in a Blazer uniform next season.
I can't help but picture Westbrook or Bill Walker going left to right on your radio dial and finishing with a thunderous "BOOM SHAKA LACKA"
If Westbrook is already gone when the Blazers chose they should
1. Look closely at DJ Augustin from Texas along and Bill Walker from KSU.
I don't think the Blazers should worry too much about finding a point guard who can step in right away because the 275 pound monster Greg Oden will be patrolling the painted area along with Aldridge and that will make everyone on the team better players - including JJack and Steve Blake.
Taking Augustin wouldn't be too big of a risk. DJ will be a player in the NBA even if he is undersized. He runs the pick and roll very well and he can shoot it. He reminds me of a young Damon Stoudamire / Mike Conley type point guard. DJ has been a winner for a long time and would fit in with the Blazers culture. He's a very smart player.
The Blazers are adding Rudy Fernandez so the team can use BRoy at the point as much as they need when Jack and Blake are not getting the job done. I can see Sergio getting more opportunities to run the team with GO in the lineup. Nate can put up with a few mistakes from Sergio and the other guards with Oden being on the floor at the same time.
The Point Guard position isn't as bad as many seem to think it is.
Bill Walker and DJ Augustin are my sleepers in the 2008 NBA Draft.
A few others who could help the team include - Joe Alexander is an athletic wing and is a tough kid who could be a valuable reserve someday or CDR - who is unorthodox but can really score the ball. Ryan Anderson from Cal could be a diamond in the rough. Taking Gallinari or Batum who they can develop in Europe for a few seasons would work with the 3 2nd round picks. If they decide to trade up, I wouldn't mind seeing the Blazers taking Russell Westbrook or even Kevin Love who would be an upgrade over Channing Frye. Frye is coming up on his contract year and could be used in a sign and trade deal later. Bill Walker might go late in round one so Pritchard would have to use a few second round picks to move up and get him.
These players should also get a look - Ty Lawson, Donte Green, Mareese Speights, Robin Lopez, Brandon Rush, Anthony Randolph, Shan Foster, Maarty Leunen, Mbah a Moute, David Padgett, Bryce Taylor.

RipCity Reporter
BREAKING NEWS OUT OF RIP CITY!
Brandon Roy has been selected to participate in the 2008 All-Star Game in New Orleans.
The Western Conference Coaches picked Roy and to me it is a bigger HONOR than being voted on by the fans who only pick their favorite players.
I emailed Jay Allen with my prediction -I thought BRoy would make the team over Ginobli because I felt BRoy is having a better year leading his team. Congratulations to Brandon Roy who is the 1st Blazer since Sidney Wicks to make the All-Star team in his 2nd year.
Looking back:
If you read the pre-season predictions of Jason Quick ( who does a poor job trying to cover the team for the local fishwrap) along with many other publications and Blazer critics, you will see I had faith in the roster after Pritchard sent Zach Randolph to the Knicks.
I remember Jason Quick saying on the Fan that he thought the Blazers would have a hard time replacing Zach's scoring. I disagreed.
I felt it was the best move because losing a player who would not pass the ball or run the court in favor of Lamarcus who will do all those things and play defense would make the entire team better. I thought Lamarcus would hold his own and make fans forget Zach Randolph ever played on the team.
I give the Blazers a solid "B" for winning 28 games going into the All-Star break.
Looking Ahead:
The Blazers have a few players in a slump including Lamarcus Aldridge and Martell Webster.
The key to getting back to winning depends a lot on Aldridge and Webster. Can Aldridge get his groove back over the next 15 games? and will Martell step up and make the injury to James Jones irrelevant.
If both players can step up their games including their defensive effort, I believe the Blazers can still win 40+ games. James Jones returning will also be needed for the Blazers to win 40+

The Blazers have turned Portland into Rip City once again
Brandon Roy is having an All-Star season leading the Blazers and he's getting help from 9 other players on any given night.
Travis Outlaw is playing like the NBA's Most Improved, Roy should make the All-Star team, James Jones might represent the Blazers in the 3 point shooting contest during All-Star Weekend and Nate McMillan should win NBA Coach of The Year.
Things have turned around in two short years for the Portland Trailblazers and that's why Kevin Pritchard should win the award for GM of the Year.

BLAZERS ARE HOTTEST TICKET IN THE NBA
There is no better front row seat to an NBA game right now than a Portland Trailblazer ticket.
The 2nd youngest team in the league won their 12th straight game last night and if you haven't seen Brandon Roy play yet, you are missing out on something special hidden in the NorthWest Division. Red Hot and Rolling is back in Portland!
Things are shaping up well for Kevin Pritchard and his Blazers even after losing the #1 pick Greg Oden to season ending surgery. The Blazers expect Oden to be back next year along with European Star Rudy Fernandez making this roster my favorite among all NBA teams.
The Portland Trailblazers will be the team of the future in the NBA.
